You’re not alone. Many business owners assume that once a site goes live, Google will just "find it" and start ranking it. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way—especially if a few technical or strategic basics are missing.
Before you panic or call your cousin who "knows digital marketing", here are 5 quick checks you can run yourself to see if your site is even on Google’s radar.
Go to Google and type:
site:yourdomain.com
This tells you whether Google has indexed your pages. If you see results, it means your site is in the index. If nothing shows up?
Uh-oh. That means Google doesn't even know your site exists. Build website liao but Google dunno you exist – macam open shop with no signboard lah.
Fix: Submit your site via Google Search Console.
If you don’t already have GSC set up, do it now. It’s free, and it’s basically the dashboard where Google tells you what it sees (or can’t see) about your site.
Once in, check:
Coverage: Any pages marked as Excluded?
Errors: Crawling issues? Broken pages?
Performance: Are you even getting impressions?
Pro tip: Look at the “Submitted and Indexed” vs “Discovered but not indexed” rows. If many pages are stuck there, something’s off.
Some sites accidentally block Google with a badly written robots.txt file or noindex meta tags. This is usually set correctly by WordPress or CMS, but it's worth checking out.
Quick test:
Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt – See if it says Disallow: / (bad).
View your page source and search for <meta name="robots"
– Check if it says noindex.
Sometimes, the site sendiri say ‘don’t come in’ to Google, then we wonder why no ranking… macam invite people then lock the door.”
Even if your site is indexed, Google may choose not to rank it if:
The content is very short (“thin”)
It’s copied from elsewhere (duplicate)
It’s generic with no real value
This is probably one of the more common problems of not ranking well. Google’s algorithms are smart enough to filter out “meh” content. Ask yourself honestly: is this something my audience wants, or is it just filler?
Google discovers new content partly through links from other websites. If no one’s linking to your site, it’s like being in the jungle with no map.
Quick test: Use a free tool like Ahrefs' Backlink Checker or Ubersuggest to see if you have any backlinks.
If it shows zero? You're not alone—but this is something to fix ASAP.
